- LRTA advocates integrated urban public transport which is:
- Reliable
- Safe
- Cost-effective
- Accessible to all
- Environmentally sustainable
- Tramways/light rail have a major role in cities in high-demand corridors
- Tramways/light rail are particularly well-suited to providing an integrated service which implies:
- Through ticketing between modes
- Ease of physical transfer between modes
- Co-ordination with land use, development and re-development
- Good road design for trams and buses
- LRTA also advocates:
- Good facilities for the mobility-impaired, pedestrians and cyclists
- Appropriate traffic management to maximise benefit of tramways
- Heavy to Light rail conversion where suitable
- The use of TramTrain where appropriate. See TramTrain policy document
- LRTA will publicise its policy by:
- Lobbying politicians at all levels
- Support to members
- Publications including a monthly magazine
- Historical and overseas research to learn lessons from others’ experience
- Co-operation with like-minded organisations
