System Sites - United Kingdom

Official and unofficial sites covering particular light rail, tram, metro, suburban rail, funicular, peoplemover, monorail, trolleybus, and similar types of transit systems.
The range of systems covered in the same as that in the SystemsNews section of Tramways & Urban Transport and thus includes existing, under-development, and proposed systems as well as heritage operations which operate on public highways (rather than as part of a museum).
Also includes sites advocating the development of particular new systems or expansions of existing systems.
The organization parallels that in T&UT.
Official sites of system operators/developers are listed by city name (and system name for cities with more than one system).
Related sites (official and unofficial) are then listed by site name under the official site.

- Trams for Bath - Comprehensive site outlining "Trams for Bath"'s proposals.
- Birkenhead - Page of the Metropolitan Borough of Wirral's site with general information about the Birkenhead (heritage) Tramway, created in 1992, in this historic home of Europe's first street tramway (which operated from 1860 to 1937).
- Birmingham - Travel Midland Metro site with detailed timetables, travelcard and fare information (including on-line fare calculator), schematic route diagram (but no map), news, background information, extensive facts and figures section, customer care information, and more. There's even a guide to the best pubs along the route!

- Birmingham International Airport - Page of the official airport site covering the Air-Rail Link cable monorail (formerly known as SkyRail) which opened in 2003 to connect the passenger terminals to the railway station. There's one photo plus a brief overview of the Cable Liner technology, the vehicles, and the history of the project (as well as its MAGLEV predecessor).

- Blackpool - Official site for Metro Coastlines (owned by Blackpool Transport Services) which operates the historic tram line (and local bus services) with rider information (fares, timetables, system map), press releases, job opportunities, and advertising opportunities (including the different ways in which trams can be decorated). There is also a photo gallery that concentrates primarily on the tram fleet, company profile section which also concentrates primarily on facts about the tramway, and a "for sale" section with books and tram models that can be ordered.
- Blackpool Picture Book - Take a trip back to October 1962 through this gallery of more than 50 Blackpool tramways photos taken by David Bradley. Includes great night shots of illuminated trams.
- Blackpool Tramway Photos - Alan Robson's "comprehensive photo record of the current fleet of Blackpool Tramways" with almost 400 photos (as of April 2004) taken since the summer season of 2002 and organized into 15 different collections (by subject).
- Blackpool Tram and Bus Photo Archive - Alan Robson's further collection of personal photos taken from the 1970's through the 1990's with roughly 100 tram photos (as of April 2004) including a wonderful set on the illuminated trams (often with the same car in different years).
- Fleetwood - Tram and Bus pages from the Blackpool and Fylde Coast Internet Magazine.
- Fylde Tramway Society - Founded in 1971 when the tramway's future was in doubt, the Society dedicated itself to retention and development of the Blackpool to Fleetwood tramway and now works closelywith Blackpool Transport Services in regard to special events, trams restorations, and more. Centerpiece of the site is extensive background on the Blackpool Tramway fleet including an all-time roster (with work cars), information on cars that visited for periods of time, and a photo gallery of cars in advertising liveries. There are also illustrated, all-time rosters of the Blackpool & Fleetwood Tramroad Company, the Lytham St. Annes Trams, the current fleet of the
Birkenhead Heritage Tramway
mueseum line, and a special section on the Blackpool North Pier Tramway. Finally, the site also details membership and meeting schedules plus content listings for their monthly Flyde Tramway News magazine.

- Bournemouth - Poole - Christchurch - Site for the advocacy group promoting the Dorset Area Rail Transport System (DARTS) which has been incorporated into the Local Transport Plan as a result of the groups efforts. The site details the plan to increase rail network utilization in the Bournemouth area (including new services, new stations, and station upgrades) while also documenting the group's progress since the proposal was first published in 1998.
- Bradford - One page site for the Shipley Glen Tramway which has run from Saltaire up through the glen to the amusement area since 1895. The site has schedule and fare information, brief overview of the line's operation and history (with photos), plus directions on how to reach the tram (by bus, road, or train).
- Brighton - Page of the Brighton & Hove City Council site for the seasonal electric light railway service provided by the Volks Electric Railway along the waterfont between Black Rock and Brighton Pier (which became the first public electric railway in the world when it opened on 04 August 1883). There's a brief overview of the service (operating season, fares, stop locations), the line's history, and a few photos.

- Volks Electric Railway - Site for the Volks Electric Railway Association (VERA) which was formed in 1995 and has since become "an active participant in the restoration, promotion and operation of the line." Besides membership information, there's a complete rider guide (operating season and hours, fares, map), event calendar, plus fleet details (with the history of each car), a section on car modeling (including a downloadable cut-and-assemble kit, video clips, and access to an off-site weather webcam though which the cars can sometimes be seen. There's also a photo scrapbook, an illustrated history of the line since its conception by Magnus Volk (with additional historical details on particular sections available from the system map) and a profile of the "Daddy Long Legs" line to Rottingdean which, as a "sea voyage on wheels," served its short life from 1896 to 1900.

- Douglas (Isle of Man) - Page of the offical Douglas Borough Council site devoted to the Douglas Bay Horse Tramway which traces its roots to 1870. There a brief overview of the tramway's history and current operations. Another portion of the site covers the 125th Anniversay tram cavalcade in 2001. There's also an online season ticket purchase option for residents.

- The Douglas Bay Tramway - Semi-official site with entensive gallery of over 900 photos of the trams, the horses, memorabilia, special events, and more. Interspursed are articles on topics such as the depot at Derby Castle, the stable, the Home of Rest for Old Horses, ticketing history, and the history of the tramway itself. There's also a news section, events calendar, plus basic visitor information (fares, operatings season and hours, charter options), and discussion forum.

- Isle of Man Government - Railways - Portion of the official visitIsleOfMan site with brief overviews of each of the unique vintage railway services on the island: the Douglas horse trams ("the oldest trams in the world"), the Snaefell Mountain Railway (to the summit... "the only such railway in the British Isles"), the Manx Electric Railway (from Douglas to Ramsey... "one of Britain's longest vintage narrow gauge lines"). plus the Isle of Man Steam Railway, the narrow-gauge Groudle Glen Railway, the Great Laxey Mine Railway, and Railway Museum at Port Erin Station. Besides the overviews, there is summary of operating seasons, fare information, some timetables, and a guide to exploring the island by rail.

- Manx Electric Railway Society - Dedicated since 1972 toward "protecting and promoting the retention and development of the Manx Electric and other Island tramways at reasonable cost," the Society's site provides timetables (current as well as recent years), news reports, photo galleries, roster details, and articles (such as a photo-essay on the MER's unique geographical reference system), plus information on membership, the Society's history, and their publications such (as the periodic Manx Transport Review).
Exetending beyond the MER, there are also brief histories of the Douglas Horse Tramway (with roster details), the Douglas Head Marine Drive tramway (in service 1896 to 1939), the steam railway, and the island's bus system.

- Edinburgh - Official Tramtime website created by Transport Initiatives Edinburgh (tie) to provide information about the tramway proposals for Lines 1 and 2 (public consultation in 2003 with service planned for 2009) as well as Line 3 (proposals undergoing public consultation from March to May 2004 with an eye toward possible service in 2011). There are maps and descriptions of the proposed lines plus (during the consultation period) online surveys and consultation meeting schedules. Other sections of the site present background information on why trams would be good for the city as well as common questions and answers plus archives of press releases, artist conceptions, and brochures.

Portion of LRTA's own "New & Developing Light Rail Systems" section devoted to the system.
- New Edinburgh Tramways - Site for this private sector company's efforts to returns trams to the the city with news updates, a detailed description of NETCo's proposed initial route (diagrammatic map, route detail, artist conceptions, and possible service details plus technical descriptions of their proposed LR55 rail system and prototype TRAM light rail vehicle (including video of its test operation in Blackpool).

- Transport Initiatives Edinburgh - Site for the private company established by the City of Edinburgh Council in 2002 to deliver manage transport projects (such as Tramtime, the West Edinburgh Busway, and congestion charging schemes) over the next 10 to 15 years. The site has overviews of the goals and projects defined to date, the key staff involved, and a library of related documents including the Local Transport Strategy.

- Laxey - Snaefell (Isle of Man) - See Douglas - Ramsey (Isle of Man).
- Leeds - Site put together by Metro, the West Yorkshire Passenger Transport Authority, in cooperation with the Leeds City Council, to detail development of the Leeds Supertram as it had been planned prior to the project's cancellation in November 2005 due lack of Ministerial approval for the project's funding. Since the cancellation the site now focuses on "what might have been":
a vitrual tour of the system, route maps for lines 1 (South to Tingley), 2 (West to Lawnswood), and 3 (East to Whinmoor), and City Centre details, plus the planned tram fleet as well as press releases and an extensive set of frequently asked questions. There is also discussion of future alternatives to the now cancelled system.
Note: the and copies of the project newsletters once available on the site seem no longer to be available.

Portion of LRTA's own "New & Developing Light Rail Systems" section devoted to the system.
- Liverpool - Remanent of the Official Mersytram site provided by Merseytravel which previously covered the planned three line network prior to project's suspension in late 2005 due to the lack of Ministrial approval for the project's funding.
Previously available project details have been removed and, as of February 2006, the site is limited to current press releases on the project's status.

- The Unofficial Merseytram Site - Dedicated to tracking the development of the new system, this site features captioned photo galleries of the current "before construction" conditions along the line plus brief news updates and overviews of the routes (initial and future), vehicles, and construction schedule.

- London - Docklands - Portion of the Transport for London site devoted to the Docklands Light Railway with complete ticket and travel information, timetables, diagramatic maps (system, rail connections), illustrated station information (with local area map and connecting services), and information about Docklands area events (with links and visitor's guide map). Also plenty of facts and figures, background information on the original development and building of the DLR, as well as the company (Serco Docklands Limited), technologies and people used to operate it.
Other site sections cover service disruptions (planned and otherwise), press releases, customer service (including Passenger Charter and frequently asked questions), commerical opportunities (including advertising, charter, and film location information), as well as real time train departure information for any station (on site or on your mobile phone).

- Docklands Light Railway -
Portion of LRTA's own "New & Developing Light Rail Systems" section devoted to the system.
- London City Airport Extension - Site within the main Docklands site about the project to extend the system to Silvertown, London City Airport (LCY), and North Woolwich which opened in December 2005 with background information about the project, development status, route options (with maps and including the evaluation and selection process), station details (with artist conceptions), construction plan, and operational projections.
- Woolwich Arsenal Extension - Site within the main Docklands site covering the further extension of the system under the Thames to Woolwich Arsenal (as a continuation of the London City Airport extension) for service in 2009. There's a concise summary of the project's history plus an overview of the preferred scheme, discussion of the other three options considered (with map), and why the preferred option was chosen. There's also a projection of service patterns and overview of the construction project.

- Croydon Tramlink - The Unofficial Site (By S. J Parascandolo) - Following Tramlink developments since February 1999 and now the operation of the system. All the latest news (and gossip) updated every few days (with archives back to April 1999). Huge photo gallery (organized by tram stop) and marvellously detailed track maps (at least 21 different ones) designed by Peter K Gibbons.
- croydontramlink - Yahoo! Group associated with Cryodon Tramlink - The Unofficial Site and devoted to discussion of anything about the system. Generally covers news, events, technical issues, as well as things related to the website. Photos are not included in messages but a small collection is included in the Files section. Passing its first birthday with about 200 members and 350-550 messages a month (as of March 2001).

- GMPTE - Trams - Part of the Greater Manchester Passenger Transport Executive (GMPTE) site which covers the Metrolink tram service. System map, ticket and fare details, as well as basic route and schedule/frequency information.

- Greater Manchester Local Transport Plan - Site maintained by Greater Manchester Joint Transport Policy Team which details the 2001/2 to 2005/6 plan to meet Greater Manchester's future transport needs. The goals of the plan are broad in nature and cover all public transit modes (as well as roadway improvements) but of particular interest are its measures to improve the Bury-Altrincham Metrolink line as well as its discussion of the extensions to Oldham and Rochdale, Manchester Airport, Ashton-under-Lyne (as well as possibly Trafford Park, Salford, and Stockport). Both the summary and full plan are available (with excellent, if large maps) on the site as well as yearly progress reports and contact information for the Policy Team.

- Greater Manchester Strategic Rail Study - Portion of the Strategic Rail Authority site which details the June 2001 report (produced with the GMPTE, Railtrack, Manchester Airport, the Highways Agency, and the Government Office for the North West) which seeks to increase passenger and freight rail usage in greater Manchester over the next twenty years. Some of its proposals include: regular and frequent service on all suburban rail lines, tram/train operation of the Wigan via Atherton line as well as one or more of the Glossop, Marple and Rose Hill lines, and creation of a Metrolink route to East Didsbury via the Styal line corridor.

- Manchester Metrolink -
Portion of LRTA's own "New & Developing Light Rail Systems" section devoted to the system.
- Metrolink Online - Planned official Metrolink site to cover further expansion to Oldham and Rochdale, South Manchester and Manchester Airport, East Manchester and Ashton-under-Lyne, East Didsbury and Stockport, Trafford Park and The Trafford Centre, as well as to The Lowery. Currently (since at least May 2004) is redirected to the Metrolink Developments section of the GMPTE site (see below) which provides an overview and maps (requires Acrobat) of these possible extensions.
- South East Manchester Multi Modal Study (SEMMMS) - Portion of the Government Office for the North West website devoted to the study, completed in Autumn 2001, which evaluated possible transport improvements in South East Manchester over the next twenty years. Besides roadway, bus, and rail service improvements, the recommendations include consideration of a Metrolink extension beyond Stockport to Rose Hill and one from Stockport to Manchester Airport in part using an existing freight line near Sharsto. The site provides an Executive Summary as well as the Complete final report (both large files), plus press releases, newsletters, background reports, and a summary of the questionnaire responses.

- Transport plans for the Manchester Area - This really useful site summarizes of all the committed or recommended Metrolink, rail, bus, road, even bicycle related transport improvements in greater Manchester that are made by the different planning groups in different reports (as well as by the operating entities). It's organized by geographic area (and then by mode) which makes it much easier to find out what might be happening in any particular place (along with the variations being proposed in different plans).

- Tyne & Wear Transport Group - MSN Group devoted to all aspects of the the Metro's operation and history. Messages tend to focus on news plus operational events and issues while the (limited) galleries concentrate on photos taken along the lines. There's also a nicely illustrated history of the system and an overview of the vehicle fleet (with plenty of facts and figures plus coverage of the Metrocar prototypes).
Founded in May 2003 with about 25 members and 10-20 messages per month (as of October 2003).

- Nottingham - Official Nottingham Express Transit (NET) site for Line One (opened March 2004) of the new tram system with complete rider information (fares, timetables, diagramatic map, journey planner) plus stop-by-stop guides (with vicinity maps), connecting transit service information, park and ride details, and customer service information. Other sections cover safety infomation, employment and advertising opportunities, and technical details. - NET Line One - The original official NET site which is (as of April 2004) "to be redeveloped as a historical archive of the three year construction phase of Line One plus how it fits into Nottingham's transport strategy." The System Archive section has background information, detailed maps, vehicle overview, as well as streetscape and depot details (including before, during, and after photos for each tramstop location). The Construction Archive section provides the development timeline plus details of the route alignment and an overview of the power system. The News Archive contains press releases, construction newsletters, and an extensive photo gallery while the Resource Archive covers the project history, frequently asked questions, vision of the future of transport in Nottingham, assorted publications plus background on Arrow Light Rail - the design-build firm and system operator.

- NET Phase Two - Official NET site devoted to the Phase Two expansion lines to Clifton and to Chilwell (each for possible construction beginning in late 2005) with background information on each line, detailed maps (including aerial photos), route details (including planned stops, some artist conceptions), questions and answers, consultation documents, plus an extensive library of news articles and earlier consultation results (collected in 2001 and 2002). There is also a special section on how the new lines will be integrated into the planned expansion of the Nottingham railway station and another with overviews of other UK tram systems.

- NETTrams - Yahoo! Group devoted to discussion on all aspects of NET and, in particular, test running activities prior to the opening of Line 1. Messages primarily relate to ongoing news events while the photo and file sections contain a selection of construction and and test run photos. Founded in January 2003 with about 60 members and 70-90 messages a month (as of August 2003).

- Nottingham Express Transit - Portion of the Nottingham Travelwise site (maintained by the city in partnership with other agencies) focusing on NET.
Covers the ongoing development and initial construction stages of the Line One with question and answer page, general map, technical summary, and other background information. Monthly summary of news events back to late 1999. Also a mailing list you can join for further information.
Service Advisory: With the exception of roadworks information, the photo gallery, and the mailing list, most content had been removed or moved to other sites when checked in April 2004.

- Portsmouth - Remanent of the Hampshire County Council site once devoted to the initial phase of the South Hampshire Rapid Transit (SHRT) project which was planned to connect Fareham, Gosport, and Portsmouth using a modern tram system until failing to gain Ministerial approval in late 2005.
Service Advisory: Detailed information on the the route, the tunnel under Portsmouth harbour, artist conceptions, and background documents available on previous versions of the site had been removed when check in early February 2006.
- Hampshire Local Transport Plan - South Hampshire Rapid Transit - A different portion of the Hampshire County Council site devoted the South Hampshire Rapid Transit concept (within the context of the 2001-2006 Hampshire Local Transport plan) with an early description and map of the formerly proposed system (which is useful since later versions no longer appear on the main site).
- Light Rapid Transit (LRT) & Monorail - Page of the Portsmouth City Council site which provides an "information sheet" devoted to the possible Light Rapid Transit (ie, South Hampshire Rapid Transit) and Monorail (proposed by Carr West as a private sector project to run from Queen Alexandria Hospital to Clarence Pier) schemes with background summary, rationale why each project is being encouraged, environmental impact, and development process.
