LRVs take over Newark City Subway

New Jersey Transit has announced that its Newark City Subway line will be operated by new low-floor LRVs from 30 April 2001. The introduction of these new cars will see the end of PCC service, which at present is operating Monday-Friday only (weekend service is suspended to permit upgrading work on the line). There will be a PCC Farewell ceremony on Saturday 5 May.

13 February 2001

It is understood that the dates have been revised as follows:
May 11 last day of PCC revenue service
May 14-18 first week of LRV revenue service
note: closed weekends for work
May 19 Saturday ceremonial last PCC day.
Thereafter regular LRV service.

These dates should be considered provisional.

23 February 2001

We have been advised that due to technical problems with the new signalling system the changeover may be delayed as the new cars can't run (or won't for safety reasons?) with the current system.

5 May 2001

The latest information on the proposed final date for PCC operation in Newark is Friday, August 24, 2001. The following Monday, August 27, LRV's will be running. The "Retirement Ceremony" will be on Saturday, September 1, 2001.
