LRVs take over Newark City Subway (update)

Following our report earlier in the year the program for the changeover is now that the historic Presidents Conference Committee (PCC) cars will take their last run on the Newark City Subway on Friday, August 24. There will be a midday ceremony and commemorative 'final rides' for customers and enthusiasts on the Friday evening.

Over the weekend new signal and operational systems will be activated ready for the new light rail vehicles to start operating between Branch Brook Park Station and Penn Station in Newark on Monday, August 27. Initially services will be weekday only with a substitute bus service at weekends while contractors complete work on a one-mile Newark City Subway extension between Franklin Avenue (to be renamed Branch Brook Park Station) in Newark and Grove Street in Bloomfield.

Three of the PCC cars will be donated by NJ TRANSIT to the New Jersey Transportation Heritage Center, to be built in Phillipsburg. The remaining 21 PCC cars will retained by NJ TRANSIT while investigations can be made into suitable New Jersey locations where they can be restored and put into local service.
