Fort Worth's Tandy Center subway to close

Radio Shack has announced that the 'Leonards Subway' operating between the Charles D. Tandy Center and the parking area near the Trinity River is to close when the company begins construction of its new corporate campus later this year. The subway was built in 1963 to link car parking and the former Leonards department store, and has provided a shuttle service using rebuilt PCC cars since then. Weekend service has already ceased as shopping and leisure patterns have changed.

The final closure is due tomorrow Friday 30 August after some 39 years with the final car at 7:30pm There is to be a ceremonial last ride for members of the Leonard family and their guests.

Although the main reason for the line has long gone it was still used as a park and ride service and its going will cause difficulties for those of its users who may not find it easy to obtain alternative parking facilities.
