Hudson-Bergen Light Rail - Hoboken extension

The Hudson-Bergen line extension north from Newport Station to Hoboken Rail Terminal opened on the 29th September to coincide with the 2002 NJ TRANSIT Festival at the Hoboken Terminal. The extension will enable commuters to make easy connections from the light rail to NJ TRANSIT rail service as the Hoboken Terminal is served by the Main Line/Bergen County Line, Pascack Valley Line, and Morris & Essex Lines.

This extension marks the completion of the first phase of the USD992 million project. The first section opened in April 2000 with 3 further stations opening on November of the same year. The line is now approximately 9.5 miles long and according to NJ Transit officials is expected to generate up to 15,000 trips daily.

There are two further phases planned - Phase two will extend the track in Bayonne by one stop in 2003 while in 2004 a further 4 stops will be added taking the line to Weehawken serving the Lincoln Harbour and the Port Imperial ferry terminals. The third phase is planned to extend service into Bergen County after 2004.
