More progress for US light rail schemes

On 3 February the US Federal Transit Administration gave the proposed light rail scheme for Seattle, promoted as Sound Transit, its highly recommended rating, and a further USD 75 million in funding for the scheme was written into the 2003 federal budget, to supplement the USD 91 million already allocated. The Bush administration has now included the scheme in its list of projects that are proposed for a Full Funding Grant. Is this is successful a total of USD 500 million in federal funding will come to the project, which would link the city centre with Sea-Tac airport.

At the same time the FTA gave its first Record of Decision for the Phoenix light rail project. This signifies approval of the Environmental Assessment for the line and means that land purchase for the USD 1100 million scheme can start as further engineering studies are carried out for the line from north Phoenix to Mesa.
