Bochum opts for Stadler trams

The Bocum-Gelsenkirchen undertaking in the Ruhr area of western Germany has announced its intention to order 36 new trams from the Stadler company in a contract worth EUR 80 million. 30 will be metre-gauge Variotram low-floor cars, and 6 will be to a new high-floor design designated Tango. Delivery will take place in 2007-11. The Swiss company Stadler took over the Variotram design and a factory in Berlin from Bombardier, when the latter company was rationalising its product range. Metre-gauge Variotrams have been built for the Mannheim-area tramways.
