Siemens awarded Calgary contract

Siemens Transportation Systems (STS) in Canada and the U.S. jointly announced the City of Calgary's purchase of 33 additional new SD160 vehicles to expand its existing CTrain fleet with a contract worth some CDN120 million (USD99 million).

The order has come about because of increased population and jobs leading to growth in Calgary Transit's ridership and demand for increased service. The new cars feature AC propulsion compared to the DC propulsion of the existing fleet giving increased power, faster acceleration and deceleration, and lower maintenance costs.

The vehicles will be manufactured at Siemens' Sacramento, CA plant. The new cars are expected to be delivered in the Autumn of 2006 will bring Calgary's total to 149 light rail cars.
