Seattle streetcar opens

mayor Greg Nickels inaugurating service

On 12 December Seattle mayor Greg Nickels inaugurated service on the South Lake Union Streetcar, a 2.1-km city-centre circulator built at a cost of USD 52.1 M. The new tramway links the Westlake Center transit interchange with Fairview Avenue North and provides service 06.00-21.00 Monday-Thursday, 06.00-23.00 Fridays and Saturdays and 10.00-19.00 Sundays. The line is operated by three Czech-built low-floor Trio trams from Inekon Trams. Seattle is also building a north-south light rail line that is due to open in 2009.
