Seattle streetcar approval

The route for the First Hill Streetcar line planned for Seattle was approved in a city council vote Monday 3rd May. The route was selected from several alternatives proposed by the Portland, Oregon branch of the URS Engineering firm, an accomplished Portland streetcar and light rail designer. The new line will run from Pioneer Square, through the International District, up First Hill, across Capitol Hill on Broadway, and end at the light rail station.

The line is estimated to cost about USD132 million to build. Engineering design will begin immediately. The route is complicated by steep hills and complex trolleybus wiring. Construction is expected to begin in 2011 and be completed by 2013.
