GBP 2.5bn tram network proposed for Cardiff and the Valleys

The proposal by the Institute for Welsh Affairs (IWA) in association with the Cardiff Business Partnership, comes in a report 'A Metro For Wales’ Capital City Region' by transport consultant Mark Barry, which has outlined a 10-year vision for transport in the region. It is however dependent on the electrification of the Great Western Main Line to Swansea.

The report proposes adding the following new tram or tram-train routes to the existing rail network:

The report says the GBP 2.5bn plan is expensive but argues the cost "pales into insignificance" compared to the GBP 40bn of public money committed to the high speed rail link between London and Birmingham.
