Light Rail for better public transport

Infrastructure announcement

Although some 40 schemes were announced in the Chancellors Autumn statement most were road improvements plus some rail schemes but very little for light rail.

Just four additional trams for the Sheffield Supertram network plus a re-announcement of money to update the Tyne & Wear Metro and a replacement bus station for Rochdale adjacent to the existing one, allowing for the redevelopment of the town centre and complementing the arrival of Metrolink in 2014.

The remaining urban public transport schemes were bus based including the Manchester Cross City Bus and two generally unpopular 'BRT' schemes in Bristol - the Ashton Vale to (almost) Temple Meads ('BRT2') and the South Bristol Link Phases 1 and 2 - a new link road through the South Bristol area linking a number of existing radial routes into the city plus Bus Rapid Transit scheme.
