Tram Driving Championships

The European Tram Driving Championships will take place in Vienna this weekend. Now in its fourth year, the event in Austria's capital will feature a series of competitive events to test agility, driving skills and accuracy - including the game of 'tram bowling', an unusual sport where drivers use their vehicle to knock a ball into over-sized skittles. Another challenge sees drivers having to stop and start control their vehicle without spilling a full glass of water onboard their vehicle. A further test sees them making a carefully-controlled stop - bringing their tram to touching distance of a barrier, without breaking through.

The first championship took place in Dresden, to mark the 140th anniversary of the first tram to run in the city, followed by Budapest and Barcelona.

Participants come from cities all over Europe which operate trams, including Manchester, each sending a team of two who will be comparing tram operating skills and environments from their home cities and exchanging ideas as well as networking and socializing.

The 2015 competition was won by a team from Rotterdam: Carmen Orlando Cairo and Wil Breur.
