Two extensions open

In the West Midlands the first stage in the extension to New Street Station opened with trams reaching Bull Street being the first trams to reach Birmingham city centre for more than 60 years. The remainder of the extension will open in the New Year. Trams will now travel to Wo;verhampton every 6 minutes in peak hours and q5 minutes off peak. Plans are already in place to take it to Town Hall and Centenary Square by 2017 and Brindley Place, Five Ways and Edgbaston before 2021.

Meanwhile in Manchester the new stop at Exchange Square opened which will permit increasing the service to give a six-minute daytime service between Shaw and Crompton, Oldham and Exchange Square from Monday to Saturday. This 600m extension is the first stage in the second city crossing which is expected to fully open in 2017
