Brussels orders from Bombardier

On 5 February STIB/MIVB, the Brussels city transit operator, named Bombardier as preferred bidder for a framework contract that should see 175 trams join their fleet in the next decade. Subject to award of a contract, 60 vehicles will be purchased for EUR 169M, with an option for a further 115.

Delivery of the first tranche will start in 2020. There will be both 32m and 43m versions, and the contract includes spare parts, maintenance and delivery of a driver-training simulator. The new trams will be based on the 100% low-floor Flexity (STIB already has 220 in its fleet), but to a new design by Axel Enthoven, said to be based on Art Nouveau styling. Each will have two multi-functional spaces (for wheelchairs and strollers), improved lighting and information systems and air conditioning.
