Mike Parker appointed to new Commission

The U.K. Government has announced the names of the 17 members of the new Commission for Integrated Transport which will be chaired by Prof. David Begg. Members include Stephen Joseph, director of the transport campaigning umbrella group Transport 2000 and Prof. Bill Bradshaw (recently made a life peer) and David Leeder, chief executive of National Express's Urban Transit Division. Of especial interest to those concerned with light rail and tramways is the appointment to the Commission of Michael J. Parker, Director General of Nexus (The Tyne & Wear P.T.E) who is the boss of the Tyne & Wear Metro and is known to be a strong advocate of light rail as a key component of integrated urban transport systems. He has recently secured the go-ahead for the Sunderland extension to the Tyne & Wear Metro. In his previous post Mike Parker was responsible for the parliamentary and public relations for Midland Metro when Centro was securing powers for 3 light rail lines in the late 1980s/early 1990s.
