LRTA AGM – Sunderland 6-9 October 2023

The AGM will be held on Saturday 7th October in Sunderland City Hall, Sunderland, UK starting at 14:00 UK time (Zoom option is available – The link is shown on the Agenda). The AGM Documents are now available on the Members’ Page of the LRTA Membership system, please go to Light Rail Transit Association at membermojo to view and download these documents. AGM Weekend 6th-9th October 2023

This year’s AGM Weekend will be in the Northeast of England and we will be based in the City of Sunderland.
We have reserved a limited number of rooms at the Holiday Inn Sunderland, at the special price of £85 Single or £95 Double/Twin room per night if booked through the LRTA before 31st August.  The hotel is a 5-minute walk from Sunderland Railway Station and just across the road from the new Sunderland City Hall where we will be holding our AGM and Dinner.

The full programme of activities are as follows:

Friday 6th Oct
The weekend will begin on Friday afternoon with a visit to the Innovation and Training Centre at South Shields to view the new Metro vehicles. This Centre has state of the art training facilities including a track layout with signalling and a fully equipped station/platform area. The first of the new Stadler Metro fleet will be available for members to view. (Cost £6)
Assemble outside the Holiday Inn Hotel at 1.45pm. The Coach leaves at 2.00pm prompt leaving the Innovation Centre at 4.30pm.

In the evening a reception with canapes and drinks will be held at the North East Land Sea and Air Museum (NELSAM) based on the old Sunderland Airport site and adjacent to the Nissan Factory. Amongst many exhibits is a Harrier Jump Jet, a Vulcan Bomber and a Blackpool Tram. (Cost £17)
Coaches leaves the hotel at 7.00pm and will return to the hotel at 9.30pm. Please wear a warm coat as though we will be inside the Museum , there is no heating.

Transport to both the South Shields Training Centre and NELSAM is included in the cost. The coach leaves from the Holiday Inn and will drop members off after both events.



Saturday 7th Oct
On Saturday NEXUS are providing free tickets for members to ride the Metro.  Prior to the AGM a soup and sandwich lunch will be available outside the Council Chamber in the Civic Centre which is just across the road from the Holiday Inn from 1.00pm (Cost £8)

The Gala Dinner will be held in the Council Chamber starting at 7:30pm and will include a three-course meal with wine. A vegetarian option will be available. (Cost £40) There will be a cash bar from 7:00pm.

Sunday 8th Oct
On Sunday there will be a visit to the Beamish Open Air Museum. The coach will leave the hotel at 10.00am and will leave Beamish at 3.00pm. For those members wishing to head home the coach will make a stop at Durham Railway Station.
(Cost £23 Seniors over 60 or £25 Adults)

Monday 9th Oct
On Monday there will be an opportunity to ride the new Newhaven extension in Edinburgh. There is no charge but Members will need to make their own way up to Edinburgh by train where after a briefing on the project there will be an opportunity to ride the system. This is also open to Members not attending the AGM but booking is essential.

We suggest you book rail tickets for the 10.35 or 10:42 from Newcastle to Edinburgh which arrives at 12.06 or 12:12. We hope to have a room booked where there will be a brief presentation before we will be heading off to ride the tram. The tour is planned to finish by 3.30pm at the latest to allow people to catch the train home.
